Why is Quicktime my default player on Wikipedia?

I've tried changing the preferences on Quicktime, and on my other media players, (Read, WMP etc), but whenever I try to play a file on Wikipedia, eg an .ogg file, it defaults to Quicktime. Which of course won't play the file. How can I get Wikipedia files not to default to Quicktime? It's driving me demented. Why is Quicktime my default player on Wikipedia?
Of the three media players you mentioned, only Quicktime and Windows Media Player can handle the Ogg formats, and then only with plug-ins. My first %26quot;source%26quot; link will take you to a page where you can download the plug-in.

There is an easier way, though: just use Firefox 3.5. It supports Ogg Theora video and Ogg Vorbis audio on any operating system, and you don't need to mess with any plug-ins to do it.

UPDATE: The reason they prohibit other file formats isn't because of %26quot;security%26quot;, it's because they're trying to make the text and images and videos and audio recordings (etc.) freely redistributable to everyone. Formats like MP3, AVI, and WMV are patented, and it's illegal to use them without paying a license fee, but Ogg formats are not patented and can be used by anybody anywhere for free. actually, all the answers were good, and added to my (admittedly very small) store of knowledge

uninstall quicktime. then when you reinstall it pay attention to the file association check box.Why is Quicktime my default player on Wikipedia?
The reason you are having this problem is twofold: 1) .ogg files are a rare format that most media players cannot play, and 2) only .ogg video files, and .ogg and .mid (midi) audio files, are permitted on Wikipedia. All other A/V formats are banned for %26quot;security reasons%26quot;.

Newer versions of Apple's QuickTime Player and Microsoft's Windows Media Player are NOT preset to play these files (although I think earlier versions of QuickTime were, which may be why you are being defaulted to QuickTime). However, it would appear that both Apple and Microsoft have .ogg plugins available. With those plugins installed, you should be able to play the files.
