Are you talking about media files? Such as .dat, .wma , .mp3, .mp4 ..... or do you mean any types of files?

If your system tries to open media files with VLC, the problem is settings of the media files. Select the media file you want to open with another program than VLC; right click it%26gt;choose properties%26gt;there you can see a button written 'Change'%26gt;click it%26gt;if the program exsist in the ment select it (IF not browse appropriate program) %26gt;and click OK.

If you are talking about any types of files then it's different matter. How to change the default program for opening files on Microsoft XP?
You can set which program you want to open specific file types by going to Control Panel/Folder Options and then clicking the 'File Types' tab.

You will see all possible file extensions listed. Find the ones that you wish to change the default opening program for and click once on it to highlight it. You will then see which program opens it and you can change it to a different one if you wish, or if you are not sure what is supposed to open it (but you know its not VLC media player) just click the restore button. How to change the default program for opening files on Microsoft XP?
Right click the file you want to open in a different program. Mouse over 'Open with...' in the menu. If the program is in the list click it. If it is not in the list (or if you want to make it so that type of file always opens in the program of your choice) the click 'Choose Program...' at the bottom of the list. A window will appear with many other choices, choose one and if you want it to be the default program for that type of file check the box that says 'always use the selected program to open this kind of file'

If the program you want to use is still not in the list you can click the browse button and navigate to the program that you want to use but that is a little more advanced.

There are other ways but this should work best for any file and program.
